A common question many people ask is whether there is a big difference between electric guitar and steel string acoustic guitar.

Yes, there is but what you learn on one can easily be transferred to the other.  In other words, they both have the same number of strings and can be played in very similar, if not the same, ways.

In general, electric guitars have a little bit lower action and lighter gauge strings.  That means that the strings are closer to the fretboard as well as being thinner.  Therefore, the strings are easier to press down and play chords.

This makes switching from acoustic to electric a little easier and if you switch from electric to acoustic, there will be a brief period of getting used to pressing the strings down harder.  In general, there is no problem with starting on either.

However, a nylon sting guitar is set up so the strings are slightly further apart.  So while the strings are easier on the fingers, they are further apart which means that you might need to stretch your fingers more to reach desired notes.

I suggest choosing the kind of guitar you start with on what styles you like most.  If you like rock, get an electric guitar.  If you like classical, get a nylon string guitar.  If you need any other advise please feel free to ask me.
